How we lay it
Survey & quote
We visit, measure up and give you a free, no-obligation quote with a clear scope.
Ground preparation
We excavate to depth and lay a properly compacted sub-base, the foundation that makes a surface last.
Edgings & levels
We set edgings and falls so the finished surface sheds water correctly.
Lay the surface
We lay the binder and surface course by hand or machine and compact it for an even, durable finish.
Finish & aftercare
We tidy the site and give you simple guidance for the first few weeks.
Tarmac is hard wearing, quick to lay and cost effective, which is why it is such a popular choice for driveways, roads and larger areas. Laid by hand or machine to suit the area, it gives a smooth, even surface, with levels set for sensible drainage, and it is straightforward to look after. Other finishes such as block paving or gravel can suit some projects better on looks or drainage, so we will give you an honest recommendation rather than push one option.
If your existing surface is tired or breaking up, tarmac repairs and resurfacing is often the better-value route, and for larger sites we also handle commercial and car park surfacing and the groundworks and site clearances that come before a new surface goes down. Not sure which surface is right for you? Our driveways page walks through the options.
To keep a new tarmac driveway looking its best, give it a few weeks to fully harden before heavy or turning loads, keep edges supported, and clear away spills and standing water. Look after it and a well laid surface will serve you for many years.

Frequently asked questions
How long before I can drive on a new tarmac driveway?
Tarmac is usually ready for foot traffic within a few hours and light vehicle use after about 24 to 48 hours, once it has cooled and set. We will give you clear guidance for your specific job when we finish, including how to care for it in the first few weeks.
How long does a tarmac driveway last?
Laid on a properly prepared base and looked after, a tarmac driveway can last for many years, commonly in the region of 15 to 20. Good ground preparation and drainage make the biggest difference to how long a surface lasts.
Can you lay tarmac over an existing surface?
Sometimes. If the existing base is sound we can overlay it, which can be quicker and more cost effective. If it is breaking up or poorly drained, a proper dig-out and new base will give a far longer lasting result. We will tell you honestly which suits your job.
Is tarmac a good choice compared with other driveway surfaces?
Tarmac is hard wearing, quick to lay and cost effective, which makes it a popular choice for driveways, roads and larger areas. Other finishes such as block paving or gravel suit some projects better, so we will talk you through the right option for yours.
Do you repair and resurface existing tarmac as well as lay new?
Yes. As well as new surfaces we carry out tarmac repairs, patching and full resurfacing. If your existing drive or road is tired or breaking up, we can advise whether a repair or a fresh surface is the better value.
Do you cover commercial tarmac as well as driveways?
Yes. Alongside domestic driveways we surface car parks, yards, private and farm roads, and access areas for businesses, estates, farms and caravan parks across East Lothian and the surrounding areas.
